Women were saluted for their fashion sense and urged to be confident and fierce at Variety and Women’s Wear Daily’s second annual Stylemakers luncheon Thursday at Quixote Studios in West Hollywood.

The event celebrated the intersection of fashion, beauty and entertainment. Actress Lily Collins presented Oscar-winner Albert Wolsky the Costume Designer Honor; singer Kelly Rowland gave Diplo the Male Style Innovator Award, while Tracee Ellis Ross received the Female Style Innovator Award from WWD’s west coast bureau chief Marcy Medina; Emma Stone presented the Make-up Artist Honor to Rachel Goodwin; Jenna Dewan Tatum received the Dyson Style Renegade Award from Jen Atkin; and Zuhair Murad accepted the Fashion Designer Award from Nina Dobrev. Also being honored were Danilo with the Hair Stylist Award and Petra Flannery with the Stylist Award.

In her welcome speech, given with WWD Beauty Inc. editor Jenny B. Fine, Variety co-editor-in-chief Claudia Eller said she was happy to turn away from last week’s presidential election and focus on something pleasant like the Stylemakers event.

Dewan Tatum, like some other speakers, also referred to the election, saying while she loves “fashion and glamour trends, given the current climate, there seems to be a lot of fear and hate. Use social media to spread messages of love, we need it now more than ever.”

Ross, in her acceptance speech, said, “I choose what makes my heart sing.” Noting that she’d been called a “risk taker” on the red carpet, she added, “I do not play by the rules and I do not like trends, though sometimes I do. Let your magic show and get out of the way.”

During a conversation with Eller, “Rules Don’t Apply” director-star Warren Beatty, star Lily Collins and costume designer Albert Wolsky, discussed their creative collaboration on the upcoming movie.

“We had worked together before [on ‘Bugsy’]. That is an tremendous advantage,” Wolsky explained. “Warren is very trusting.”

“I am very trusting of some people,” Beatty quipped.

The trio talked of a collaboration that began before the cameras even rolled, spending hours at Beatty’s home discussing the movie. Collins said she was able to give her input to Wolsky and the costume designer even incorporated some of her ideas.

“Everything was discussed, evolved,  and changed until we got it right,” said Wolsky. “The important thing is the actor has to feel comfortable. If they feel awkward, it’s not good.”

Sometimes a little discomfort was needed. “Undergarments from the ’50s were really uncomfortable, hard to get on and off, but give the body great shape,” Collins explained. The look “informed a lot about her character,” she said. “I think as an actor, every time you’re in your [character’s] clothes it informs the character.”

As to why Beatty, who has worked with other costume designers over the decades, chose to return to Wolsky 25 years after they had collaborated on “Bugsy,” the director said, “you’re lucky if you get Albert to do a movie.”

Zuhair Murad

In another conversation, designer Murad talked to WWD’s Medina about his entry into Hollywood, creating red carpet looks for such stars as Jennifer Lopez, Taylor Swift, Kristen Stewart and Sofia Vergara.

“My favorite era in cinema is the ‘40s and ‘30s,” he said. “Women were sophisticated … hair and makeup, the elegance.”

Murad recalled J.Lo reached out to him after watching his runway show on TV. She wore one of his creations to the Met Gala, the biggest fashion event of the year. “She’s a lucky charm for me,” he beamed.

Taylor Swift wore another creation with transparent embroidery to a Victoria Secret afterparty, setting off a trend. “The red carpet is great for my business,” he explained. “Whey they saw my design on the red carpet, calls came from stores. It was a big factor in my business.”

Anastasia Beverly Hills, Dyson Supersonic and Mercedes Benz served as presenting sponsors.
