The long-gestating musical adaptation of Garry Marshall‘s “The Flamingo Kid” has set a production timeline, targeting a spring 2018 bow on Broadway with book and lyrics by Robert L. Freedman (“A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder”) and music by Scott Frankel (“Grey Gardens”).

The idea of a “Flamingo Kid” musical has been kicking around for years with a shifting roster of creative teams attached — a 2005 industry reading, for instance, had music by Henry Krieger (“Dreamgirls”) and lyrics by Susan Birkenhead (“Jelly’s Last Jam”). The new incarnation teams Freedman, who won a Tony for “Gentleman’s Guide,” with Frankel, whose latest musical, “War Paint,” recently opened in Chicago and seems likely to land on Broadway.

News of the “Flamingo Kid” musical arrives in the wake of the recent death of Marshall, who directed and co-wrote the 1984 movie that became a star-marking turn for Matt Dillon. Set in 1963, “Flamingo Kid” follows an 18-year-old from blue-collar Brooklyn whose summer job at a fancy Long Island beach club, the El Flamingo, finds him caught between two worlds.

The musical’s score will draw on the musical palette of the era, including musical styles like doo-wop and R&B. Publicity for the brewing production promises a beach club pool center stage.

Bob Israel, the producer (“Bachelor Party”) who is also a co-founder of Hollywood ad agency Aspect Ratio, and Larry Hirschhorn (“Gentleman’s Guide,” “Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike”) will produce. Further elements of the production — including casting, director and other details — remain to be set.
