HBO’s “Game of Thrones” and FX’s “The People V. O.J. Simpson” were the big winners Saturday at the first half of the Creative Arts Emmy Awards presentation.

“Thrones” lapped the field in craft and technical categories with nine wins, including the nods for casting, visual effects, stunt coordination and production design. “People V. O.J. Simpson” came away from Saturday’s ceremony at the Microsoft Theater with four wins, including casting, hairstyling, editing and sound mixing.

The Creative Arts ceremony has been split into two nights this year, with the remaining categories to be presented Sunday. HBO led the network field as of Satuday with 11 trophies, followed by FX with 10 and PBS with five.

Saturday’s awards included the four guest acting categories. Margo Martindale made it two in a row for her work on the FX drama “The Americans.” Hank Azaria won drama actor for Showtime’s “Ray Donovan.”

Tina Fey and Amy Poehler shared the comedy actress win for their co-hosting stint on “Saturday Night Live.” But the most surprising win of the night belonged to Peter Scolari, for his work on HBO’s “Girls.”

Scolari, who plays the father of Lena Dunham’s Hannah Horvath character, was not on the list when the Emmy nominations were announced in July. But after it was determined that Peter MacNicol was not technically eligible for the nomination that he received for HBO’s “Veep” (he appeared in too many episodes to be considered a guest star) Scolari entered the race as he was the next highest vote-getter in the nominations balloting.

The win was especially sweet given, as Scolari noted backstage, the inevitable peaks and valleys in an actor’s career.

“I’ve been at this for 42 years,” he said. “I really wanted it.” At the same time, he said the victory after four previous noms was also humbling.

“The worst thing for an actor is to buy his own hype,” he said. “I’ll be 61 years old on Monday. I want to celebrate the blessings as a human being that I’ve been given.”

Tunesmith Diane Warren was among the night’s notable winners. Warren’s song “Until It Happens to You” for the documentary “The Hunting Ground” won for music and lyrics. The song was nominated but didn’t win earlier this year at the Oscars, marking Warren’s eighth loss at the Academy Awards. But her Emmy win came on her first try.

“I’m kind of blown away right now,” she said. Warren also made a point of dedicating her win to Ronnie Chasen, her longtime publicist who was murdered in 2010.

USA Network’s “Mr. Robot” picked up its first Emmy with the music composition win for composer Mac Quayle. CBS’ “The Late Late Show with James Corden” prevailed for interactive program, recognition that bodes well for the first-year show’s chances in the comedy-variety show category on Sept. 18.

The wins for “Thrones” and “People V. O.J. Simpson” underscored both program’s momentum this year. “Thrones” leads the field of Emmy nominees overall with 23 bids, while “Simpson” grabbed 22 noms.

Martindale made an unabashed plea for the underdog of the drama series race, “The Americans,” the much-loved FX drama that finally broke into the Emmy race for its fourth season.

“Let this be the year of ‘The Americans!’ ” she exclaimed backstage. She credited her win to the rising tide of appreciation for the 1980s-set spy drama, and the skill of showrunners Joe Weisberg and Joel Fields. Martindale had a limited role in the show’s fourth season.

“It has more to do with the love for ‘The Americans’ than it has to do with me,” Martindale said of her win.
