BEVERLY HILLS >> “La La Land” will look to continue its winning ways Sunday at the 69th annual Writers Guild of America Awards as the musical battles for the guild’s best original screenplay honor with “Hell or High Water,” “Loving,” “Manchester by the Sea” and “Moonlight.”
Competing for best adapted screenplay will be the writers of “Arrival,” “Deadpool,” “Fences,” “Hidden Figures” and “Nocturnal Animals.”
On the television side of the awards, HBO’s awards magnet “Game of Thrones” and Netflix’s popular streaming series “Stranger Things” are among the nominees for drama series writing honors. They will compete with the scribes behind FX’s “The Americans,” AMC’s “Better Call Saul” and HBO’s “Westworld.”
Comedy series writing nominees are FX’s “Atlanta,” Amazon’s “Transparent,” Netflix’s “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” and HBO’s “Silicon Valley” and “Veep.”
Nominated for best writing in a new series are “Atlanta,” FX’s “Better Things,” “Stranger Things,” NBC’s “This is Us” and “Westworld.”
The WGA Awards will be presented at The Beverly Hilton in a ceremony hosted by actor-comedian Patton Oswalt. A separate ceremony will be held simultaneously in New York.
During the ceremony, a series of special honors will be presented.
Writer/director Richard Curtis, best known for films such as “Four Weddings and a Funeral” and “Bridget Jones’ Diary,” will receive the WGA’s Valentine Davies Award for Humanitarian Service, recognizing his work including the co-founding of the Comic Relief anti-poverty crusade.
The late Iranian writer/director Abbas Kiarostami will be awarded the 2017 Jean Renoir Award for International Screenwriting Achievement for a career that includes the films “Taste of Cherry,” “The Wind Will Carry Us” and “Close-Up.”
Veteran television writer Dan Wilcox, best known for his work on the classic series “MASH,” will receive the 2017 Morgan Cox Award in recognition of his “exemplary service” to the union.
Screenwriter Susannah Grant, known for “Erin Brockovich” and “In Her Shoes,” will receive the Paul Selvin Award in honor for her script for HBO’s “Confirmation,” which “best embodies the spirit of constitutional rights and civil liberties.”
Writer/director Oliver Stone will receive the Laurel Award for Screenwriting Achievement, honoring a career that includes films such as “Platoon,” “Born on the Fourth of July,” “JFK” and “Wall Street.”
Mike Judge, best known for “King of the Hill,” “Beavis and Butt- head” and “Silicon Valley,” will receive the Animation Writing Award for lifetime achievement.
“The West Wing” and “The Newsroom” creator Aaron Sorkin will be honored with the Paddy Chayefsky Laurel Award for Television Writing Achievement.
