Jonathan Demme films: (Amazon, iTunes) Demme, who died last week at 73, was one of my favorite directors. In the 1970s he started making B films for Roger Corman — like “Crazy Mama,” which starred Cloris Leachman as the head of a ’50s-era mob family — and he always showed a style and wit far above the budgets. In 1980, he gave us the offbeat and touching comedy “Melvin and Howard.” Music was important to him and he liked doing documentaries on his pal Neil Young (“Heart of Gold,” 2006). His most famous doc was the astounding “Stop Making Sense,” a 1984 Talking Heads concert film. I loved his strange screwball comedies — “Something Wild” (1986) and “Married to the Mob” (1988) — and the film version of Spaulding Gray’s one-man show “Swimming to Cambodia.” “Silence of the Lambs” (1991) and “Philadelphia” (1993) made him a big name in Hollywood, getting a directing Oscar for the former. Most of his big name features after that — “Beloved” and “The Manchurian Candidate” — met with mixed success but displayed humanity. His 2008 indie “Rachel Getting Married” showed Demme at his best and brought Ann Hathaway an Oscar nomination for her performance. You’ll have to track down “Crazy Mama.” “Something Wild” is on Vudu. “The Manchurian Candidate” is on Amazon and Netflix.
