Berenice Hernandez
Observations on the means to carry on
Hernández's ceramic installations and sculptures are often minimal and humble. She approaches her work like a playful architect with building blocks she makes by brushing clay on paper, layer by layer until she has thick stacks of hundreds that she after firing cuts into blocks. With the blocks she builds structures that she refers to as shelters, dwellings and stations. For the artist, playfulness in making is an integral component to all her works, always leaving plenty of room for improvisation. Yet she builds and organizes her works with great attention and precision. The artist’s habitat is an edge where raw meets polished, fragile meets lasting, and playful meets somber -- and perhaps where Mexico meets Scandinavia.
Berenice Hernández was born in 1982 in Mexico City. She lives and works in Oslo. She started her ceramic training in Mexico City, went on to study ceramics in Sweden and is currently completing her studies at the Oslo National Academy of the Arts. Berenice Hernández has shown works in Mexico, Sweden and Norway. Recent exhibitions include Årsutstillingen 2018 in Norway, the 8th Biennale of Ceramics at the Franz Mayer Museum in Mexico City and the group exhibition Kropp at Galleri Ram in Oslo. Her work was recently acquired by KODE.
Materialized
A jewellery project by Metal and jewellery students at the Art and Craft department
The assignment for each student was to make a wearable ring with at least two materials of their own choice. The exhibition will display a great variety of material and technical explorations by the eleven students.
The project was lead by Sigurd Bronger, professor at the Art and Craft Department at KHiO.
