Pixar's forthcoming film Coco could be the most upbeat festive film about skeletons since Tim Burton's 1993 hit The Nightmare Before Christmas.

A new trailer, released today, gives a glimpse into the animated feature's quirky idea of the afterlife – a world with riotous music and bright orange grass.

Inspired by the Mexican Day of the Dead festival, the film follows a 12-year-old boy who finds himself accidentally whisked off to the afterlife by playing an enchanted guitar. Once there, he is reunited with his dead (and skeletal) relatives, and with their help tries to find his way back home.

Directed by Lee Unkrich and Adrian Molina, the film stars pop singer Anthony Gonzalez, Benjamin Bratt and Golden Globe-winner Gael García Bernal (Mozart in the Jungle), and features a cameo from comedian Cheech Marin (one half of comic double-act Cheech & Chong).

The Disney/Pixar production sparked controversy in 2013, when the Walt Disney Company attempted to trademark the phrase "Día de los Muertos" or "Day of the Dead" – the name of an annual religious festival in Mexico. More than 20,000 people signed a change.org petition condemning the company's actions. "Our spiritual traditions are for everyone, not for companies like Walt Disney to trademark and exploit," the petition read.

Coco is out in the US and Canada from November 22, and will be released in the UK on January 19, 2018.
