Warner Bros. is reportedly planning a reboot of The Matrix, news that split opinion among fans of the sci-fi classic

Screenwriter Zak Penn, whose recent credits include The Avengers, is in talks with the studio to write the new treatment, sources told the Hollywood Reporter.

The Wachowski brothers, who wrote and directed the original and its two sequels, are currently not involved in the project, but Warners would be keen to get their blessing at the very least, the magazine reported.

Warner Bros are also reported to be interested in lining up Michael B. Jordan, star of Creed, as a possible star.

The Matrix, starring Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Anne Moss and Laurence Fishburne, was released in 1999 and went on to become a cult hit.

While the sequels The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions were not as well received, the trilogy made Reeves won of the richest actors in Hollywood.

Keanu Reeves, who starred as Neo in the original franchise, said recently he would be open to returning for another installment if the Wachowskis were involved.

"They would have to write it and direct it. And then we’d see what the story is, but yeah, I dunno, that’d be weird, but why not?” he told Yahoo Movies

The studio is reportedly interested in emulating what Disney has done with Star Wars, creating spin off films from the Matrix universe.

With such a large fan base, a new installment of the franchise would generate huge interest and reports of a reboot stirred speculation on social media.

Twitter users were also quick to point out the news coincided with a partial release of Donald Trump's tax returns.
