A British backpacker was allegedly raped, assaulted and choked repeatedly during a two-month hostage ordeal across the Australian outback.

The woman, aged 22, was rescued when police made a routine traffic stop on the Warrego Highway in Mitchell, 350 miles northwest of Brisbane, on Sunday. Officers noticed that the woman driving the 4x4 vehicle looked “visibly distressed and had injuries to her face”.

An Australian man, named in court as Marcus Martin, 22, according to The Daily Telegraph, was discovered in an alcove towards the back of the vehicle.
