A young British woman was held captive for five weeks and repeatedly raped, beaten and choked after being kidnapped by a man she had met at a party, Australian police have said.

The 22-year-old backpacker, thought to be from the northwest of England, was rescued by police after they had stopped the white Mitsubishi Pajero she was driving in a remote area of Queensland. She had broken bones in her face and cuts and bruises.

They had been alerted by staff at a petrol station near Mitchell, 400 miles west of Brisbane, and when they searched the battered four-wheel drive they found a 22-year-old man hiding in a rear storage compartment.
