A 71-year-old woman with diabetes has died during a “slapping and stretching” alternative therapy retreat.

It is feared that Danielle Carr-Gomm failed to take her insulin after becoming convinced she would benefit from an unorthodox treatment regime that can leave participants severely bruised.

She was found dead in her bedroom at a country house hotel in Wiltshire in the early hours of October 20 after taking part in a “self-healing” workshop. Three people have been arrested on suspicion of manslaughter.

The workshop was run by Hongchi Xiao, who describes himself as a healer and has promoted his methods around the world. He believes stretching tendons and muscle can increase strength and loosen “blockages” in the body.
