IN THEATERS JAN. 20

“The Founder”: The rise of McDonald’s honcho Ray Kroc (Michael Keaton) is a lot darker and more interesting than the usual inspirational biopic. PG-13

“20th Century Women”: If you liked Mike Mills’ Oscar-winning movie about his unconventional dad, “Beginners,” are you ready for his comedy/drama about his unconventional mom (Annette Bening)? R

“Paterson”: Adam Driver is spellbinding as a bus driver/poet in Jim Jarmusch’s sharp, meditative character study. R

“XXX: The Return of Xander Cage”: Vin Diesel, knocking some heads. PG-13

“Split”: M. Night Shyamalan is back on the spooky stuff with this thriller about a kidnapper (James McAvoy) whose own multiple personalities may be helping his victims escape.

ON VIDEO TUESDAY, JAN. 17

“The Girl on the Train”: In the transition from book to movie, the thriller about an alcoholic (Emily Blunt, excellent) who witnesses a murder got less thrilling and much more depressing. R **

“Train to Busan”: Witty and suspenseful action from South Korea, it features a high-speed train full of passengers who are rapidly being turned into zombies. Not rated ***1/2

“Keeping Up With the Joneses”: There are some good laughs in the Jon Hamm/Zach Galifianakis comedy about spies who move to the suburbs, and it’ll play better at home, where you can fast-forward past the dumb stuff. PG-13 **½

“The Whole Truth”: Keanu Reeves and Renee Zellweger in a legal drama that doesn’t make much sense.

“Ouija: Origin of Evil”: The board game isn’t scary and neither is the movie loosely inspired by it. R *
