COLOGNE, Germany – Action continues tonight for Team USA in the 2017 IIHF Men’s World Championship with a preliminary round matchup against Sweden. Opening faceoff is set for 8:15 p.m. local time at LANXESS Arena (2:15 p.m. ET, live on NHL Network).

The contest marks the third preliminary round game for both teams.

Highlighted by three goals from Clayton Keller, two tallies from Anders Lee and 25 saves from Connor Hellebuyck, the U.S. picked up a 7-2 win over Denmark here yesterday afternoon. Sweden was off yesterday. In its most recent game, the Swedes downed host Germany, 7-2, on Saturday (May 6) evening.

Both teams have a win and a loss to date in the world championship, however, Sweden has one more point than the U.S. in the standings as their loss came in overtime.

“They’re a very good team,” said Jeff Blashill, head coach Team USA. “We’ll have our hands full tonight and look forward to the challenge.”

NOTES: The U.S. and Sweden have not met in the world championship since 2011. The teams have met 52 times previously in the world championship with Sweden holding a 36-1-0-10-5 (W-OTW-OTL-L-T) advantage. Team USA last defeated Sweden in the tournament on May 8, 2005, by a 5-1 count. Sweden has won the last four contests played between the two nations ... Clayton Keller's hat trick in yesterday's 7-2 win over Denmark was the first hat trick for a U.S. player in the world championship since Craig Smith scored three times in Team USA's 4-1 preliminary round win over Finland on May 8, 2013, in Helsinki. Smith and his Nashville Predators have advanced to the NHL's Western Conference Finals where they will either meet the Anaheim Duck or Edmonton Oilers ... The U.S. is the home team in tonight's game and will wear its white jerseys ... Dale Tallon, part of the U.S. Men's National Team advisory group which helps select players and staff for the U.S. Men's National Team, arrived yesterday and is here for the next week. Tallon is the general manager of the NHL's Florida Panthers.
