When it comes to taking up residence along the coast, Massachusetts can be top-notch, according to Coastal Living magazine.

The publication’s list of 20 best places to live on the coast, featured in its May issue, includes the city of Boston and the Cape Cod town of Orleans.

Coastal Living picked Boston for its “stunning” civic buildings, iconic sites like the Old North Church, green spaces like the Boston Common and Public Garden, “picturesque,” transit-connected neighborhoods, and “dynamic” waterfront with islands, a commercial harbor, and the New England Aquarium.

Orleans, which the publication called a “charming New England town,” was chosen for its 54 miles of coastline and many cultural opportunities. Orleans visitors have access to more than a dozen art galleries, live theater, a variety of restaurants, and the Cape Cod Baseball League.

Coastal Living also included Orleans on its list of America’s happiest seaside towns earlier this year.

“Whether strolling its historic cottage-lined streets or padding its freshwater lakes, life is active, rich, and varied in this corner of the country,” the publication wrote.

The 20 total spots were decided by a panel of travel experts assembled by Coastal Living editors. The panel took into account each destination’s quality, coastal lifestyle, and urban and community design. Travel and living experts from Travel + Leisure magazine and Money magazine also provided insight.
